Schools Marine Challenge Race Day (South West) - Wimbleball Lake

Wind and Rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of participants of our last regional event of the year held at Wimbleball Lake.

Some 150 pupils from local primary schools came to build and race Formula Sun solar boats on Wednesday 14th July followed by pupils undertaking all classes of the scheme on the 15th for the Schools Marine Race Day.

The primary schools they were as amazed as we were that even in high winds and little sun they could make an efficient boat that worked by solar energy alone cover the 10 metre course!

The Schools Marine Race Day that followed saw the inventiveness of  Beaminster School make their solar boat the fastest with Teingmouth and  Launceston very close competition . This was to be the pattern of the day with these three schools trading places on the leader board with excellent engineering rounds and teamwork displays. In the final analysis consistency in all rounds especially the lake based racing gave the overall title to Teingmouth School with their pupils having manufactured all parts of their craft, even enlisting assistance from Princess Yachts!

Well done to all competitors and remember to make arrangements to be at the London International Boat Show in January next year.
