Unit 228

Introduction

This page provides support for the six units you are required to complete to achieve a Level 2 Qualification.

You have to complete 6 units to achieve a Level 2 Qualification.

Three are Mandatory, (you have to do them)

Unit 201 - Working safely in an engineering environment
Unit 202 – Developing yourself and working with other people on engineering activities
Unit 203 – Using and communicating technical information

Three more have been selected to give you an engineering qualification that is versatile yet covers some advanced engineering skills and knowledge:

Unit 205 – Marking Out For Engineering Activities
Unit 211 – Fitting using hand skills
Unit 228 – Making components from composite materials

Much of the work you do will be to manufacture component parts for a 1/12 scale car that will allow you opportunities to cover individual areas of study such as:
Computer aided design and manufacture
Electronic control systems
Opto-electronic timing and communication devices

Evidence Required
You will have to be very organised to record all your work in a portfolio. This will be required throughout the course for assessment.
You will be assessed by your specialist tutors throughout the course, they will expect you to be able to describe and discuss the work you are doing as well as recording your progress in an activity log.
You will have to show that you can cover all of the unit content safely, and after practice without the assistance of your tutor.

Your course tutors will help you with all the requirements for Performing Engineering Operations
You will also have a Mentor who will guide in planning and time management of your whole course including Work placements, School and college based components.

Unit Descriptions

Unit 201 - Working safely in an engineering environment
This unit covers the competence required to work safely in an engineering environment and that you understand the health and safety requirements of the workplace. You will be expected to carrying out work activities in accordance with instructions and the use of safe working practices and procedures. Identify hazardous situations, equipment, materials or conditions and how to take appropriate action to eliminate or minimise the risks. You are expected to dress (wear appropriate clothing), behave and maintain the workplace in a manner that is acceptable to the organisation in which you work and the type of activities carried out.

Unit 202 - Developing yourself and working with other people on engineering activities
You will be expected to develop engineering skills and work effectively on engineering activities in a spirit of co-operation with others involved. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with your supervisors, workgroup colleagues and others. You are to be responsible for planning, working towards and monitoring objectives.

Unit 203 - Using and communicating technical information
You will be able to make effective use of text, numeric and graphical information by interpreting and using technical information from engineering drawings, technical manuals, reference tables and charts etc. You will be taught to create engineering sketches and provide information in the form of job planning, log book, reports etc. for the purpose of communicating technical information.

Unit 205 - Marking out for Engineering Activities
You will develop skills in using mechanical marking out equipment to prepare for both hand and machine tool operations. You will work with a variety of materials including: ferrous, non-ferrous, non-metallic and composites which cover a range of supply states including, stock sizes, castings, forgings and pre-machined components. You will develop the planning and preparation of marking out to stated tolerances and be familiar with the use of datum's, work holding devices, specialist requirements of different types of material and forms of supply. When faced with complex operations you will be able to recognise problems and seek appropriate help in determining solutions.

Unit 211 - Fitting using hand skills
During this unit you will have to produce components and simple assemblies using hand tools and hand fitting techniques. Included in this unit is the necessity for planning the sequence of operations and tools needed for the required fitting and manufacture. During manufacture and fitting you will be expected to check quality and sizes using the appropriate measuring equipment for the aspects to be checked and tolerances to be achieved.

Unit 228 - Making components from composite materials
You will be required to produce components using laying-up, laminating and/or moulding techniques. Using pre-prepared formers, jigs or moulds you will be required to produce components and finish them with hand tools such as brushes, rollers or spray equipment as well as portable power tools for trimming. In producing components you will be required to interpret and work to relevant specifications. At each stage of manufacture and on completion, you will be expected to check the workpiece using measuring equipment appropriate to the aspects being checked and tolerances to be achieved, and ensure that the workpiece is within dimensional requirements.

Manufacture - Test Pieces
In this topic you will manufacture three test pieces to required standards. This will increase your skills in basic manufacturing techniques, go through practically the health and safety requirements when using tools and equipment and marking out to required specifications. During manufacture and fitting you will be expected to check quality and sizes using the appropriate measuring equipment for the aspects to be checked and tolerances to be achieved.

Manufacture - Scribing block
You will be required to manufacture a scribing block to required specifications. This topic will further increase your skills in manufacturing techniques, marking out and quality assessments. You will also understand the fitting and assembly of components to a required standard. During manufacture and fitting you will be expected to check quality and sizes using the appropriate measuring equipment for the aspects to be checked and tolerances to be achieved.

Manufacture - Electric Car
You will be required to manufacture all the components not in the kit to scratch engineer a 12th scale electric powered car; including the chassis, body shell, front suspension, rear suspension, steering assembly and drive train. This is a more complete fitting and assembly task where attention to detail will be required at each manufacturing stage to ensure correct operation of the finished product. At each stage of manufacture and on completion, you will be expected to check the workpiece using measuring equipment appropriate to the aspects being checked and tolerances to be achieved, and ensure that the workpiece is within dimensional requirements.
